International Seminar on Socio-Cultural Exchange between United Arab Emirates and Kerala

International Seminar on Socio-Cultural Exchange between United Arab Emirates and Kerala
Department of Arabic, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram

The Department of Arabic, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram is organizing a Three Day International Seminar titled “Socio-Cultural Exchange between United Arab Emirates and Kerala” on 17 th, 18th, and 19 th July 2011.

United Arab Emirates' economic, political and cultural links with India, which date back to more than a century ago, are matured and multi-dimensional.  60% of total population of the country is occupied by Indians especially Keralites. 42% Kerala migrants settled in different Emirates' of the country are the real makers of the present day Gulf. The UAE government itself considers Malayalam as their third official language after Arabic and English. The country has many temples, Ashramas and Churches, to satisfy the needs the respective community. The large scale migration has produced so much economic, social and cultural impacts on both Kerala and UAE.

The objective of the seminar is to facilitate, share and exchange of Socio-Cultural experiences of the past and present between two states having large number of migrants. To get younger generation acquainted and enlightened with the deep-rooted and an un-interrupted bond and mutuality between the Arab world and Kerala from time immemorial. The Seminar also provides a platform to share views and relevant information among participants through interactions on different related topic. At present the focus is particularly on Kerala and the UAE, at a time when the neo-liberal order is very much alive.

Organizing an International Seminar of this nature highly relevant to the capital of Kerala and the UAE, at a time when the United Arab Emirates has agreed to set up a Consulate in Kerala. Presence of the Indian Community in the UAE is estimated to be around 1.75 million (50% of total population of the country) making it a single largest expatriate community in that country .A significant populace among them is Keralite.
